Telephone NumbersWhen visiting Thailand it is crucial to have a list of emergency contact numbers to hand and in a safe place. In most of the Western countries it's a simple matter to pick up a phone and quickly reach Directory Enquiries to find a number in an emergency. But in Thailand this process is more obscure and can't be relied upon. Also on Samui the emergency response of the police or vehicles like ambulances are not clearly defined and so it is important to have access to phone numbers that you know you can rely on under dire circumstances. One such contact is that of Samui Rescue. This is a volunteer group begun by a Thai man more than 10 years go but today it has grown into an integrated system of land and sea response that is largely staffed by Western ex-pats living here. English is spoken and the response is very quick indeed. Similarly, the Western volunteers of the Tourist Police work closely with the local police and are essential in helping to resolve the aftermath of such calamities as road traffic accidents and the like.
